It's really difficult to capture the vastness of the Grand Canyon on a 2-D photo - you have to be there!
These people were more brave than I to go that close to the edge - it's a MILE down to the bottom!

Wow! I managed to see and photograph one of the extremely rare California Condors. This bird, beautiful in flight, has a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet! (It's being chased by ravens, which are also large birds.) The total, worldwide population of these birds got down to 22 in 1982. All the remaining birds were then captured and bred in captivity. As the young ones matured, they were set free into the wild, some in CA and the rest here at the Grand Canyon. There are now a total of 184 birds and they are all numbered and have transmitters attached to them so they can be monitored. They have an estimated life span of up to 60 years! The girl in pix #3 above is tracking this bird, Number 36, a six year-old female that was released on December 12, 1996 as a 6 month old. For more information about California Condors see this website.
